Allow me to demonstrate the power of the Gesshi Clan!
~ Hanafuuma in Otomedius Excellent

Gesshi Hanafuuma (月士華風魔 (げっしはなふうま) Hanafuuma Gesshi?) is a character in the Gradius spin-off game Otomedius Excellent. She is inspired by Getsu Fuma, from the 1987 Konami game GetsuFumaDen.

She is one of the starting characters in the game and a newcomer to the Otomedius series. She is best friends with Kokoro Belmont, another transfer student in St. Gradius Academy and who is representative of the Castlevania series, a franchise that shares many similarities and history with the GetsuFumaDen series.

She was voiced by Satomi Satō.

History[]

Gesshi Hanafuuma was raised like a boy, the second "son" of the current generation of the clan of the three Getsu brothers of legend. While being trained extensively in the art of demon-slaying, she knows nothing about being a girl at all. She has been given a single year to find a new master at St. Gradius Academy to continue her training, both in the way of the sword and what it means to be a woman.

Hanafuuma is a bit clumsy and not very well used to most of the modern world, as well as its technology. She has now joined the Angel Squadron along with fellow transfer student Kokoro Belmont to help defeat the Bacterian Army. Through sheer willpower, she can unleash her powerful weaponry and skill.

She has combined her Angel Squadron uniform with the traditional armor of her clan, and keeps one of the famed Hadou katana at her side, even when flying into battle.

Her nemesis is Ryukotsuki, revived in the current day after having been defeated in the past by her distant ancestor, Getsu Fuma, in GetsuFumaDen.

Trivia[]

  • Her family name being 月士 (Gesshi), rather than just 月 (Getsu), is due to the 士 affix, denoting her as a Getsu clan master, and changing the pronunciation of her given name to indicate her position. This is sometimes also seen with Getsu Fuma's name, such as in the instruction booklet of Wai Wai World 2, or on one of his cards in Monster Retsuden ORECA BATTLE.
  • Hanafuuma is the first Otomedius character who is a samurai warrior by lineage.
  • Hanafuuma transferred to St. Gradius Academy along with Kokoro Belmont, who is the representative of the Castlevania series, a franchise that shares many similarities and history with the GetsuFumaDen series.
  • Hanafuuma is the first Otomedius character whom her speaking language is native Japanese.
  • Hanafuuma is the first Angel Squadron member to have no Options on her Riding Viper.
  • Her Riding Viper represents the Axelay fighter craft, with aesthetics calling back to her armor and the GetsuFumaDen era.
    • Furthermore, the name of her Riding Viper, "Hadouken", is a reference to the Hadou katana, also known by the name of "Hadōken".
  • Hanafuuma's outfit design also bears some resemblance to Genbei "Jaguar" Yagyu, an alien samurai from Neo Contra.
  • Hanafuuma is in Class 4-B along with Aoba Anoa and Erul Tron.
  • She is the first squadron member to hold a weapon on her person, the ancestral Hadou katana, while Kokoro Belmont has a Vampire Killer-derivative whip.
  • Hanafuuma's Platonic Break can be manifested in a flaming dragon, like one of the special attacks of the Trigon player ship, and which in turn seems to be based on the Intruder, an iconic fire dragon enemy from the Gradius series.
  • Hanafuuma and Kokoro are teammates and their main outfits maintain accordingly to their themes.
  • Her unique weapon, Nen-Do-Ha, is the first weapon name that has a Japanese/kanji language shown on the weapon's banner; it seems to resemble TwinBee's Triple Wave.
    • This weapon is most likely an alternate spelling or a reference to the Dainendōha, a secret technique which allows the Hadou katana to hurl energy waves at enemies once all three blades are collected.
  • Hanafuuma's DLC background music themes are based from GetsuFumaDen, like "GO Getsu Fuuma!!" as well as "Colony" from Axelay, with arrangements of "Unkai" and "Mother".
  • Hanafuuma's DLC costume is her gym outfit, in which she is seen running during the credits.
  • The exclusive missile weapon that comes with the gym outfit is the 2-Way Back missile.
  • Gesshi shares the same voice actress as Ryukotsuki and the Gradian Operator: Satomi Satō.
