GetsuFumaDen: Undying Moon is an upcoming hack-and-slash, action-adventure, roguevania platformer video game developed by GuruGuru and published by Konami. It is planned to be released on PC (via Steam) and Nintendo Switch sometime in 2022. An Early Access version of the game was released on Steam on May 13, 2021.

The game is a sequel to GetsuFumaDen, released 34 years earlier. The story takes place a thousand years after the first game and stars a new character also named Getsu Fuma, who is the 27th leader of the Getsu Clan and a direct descendant of the protagonist of the first game. The player controls Fuma in a journey through hell on a mission to reestablish its recently broken seal, which is allowing monsters to invade the surface world, as well as to find the whereabouts of his lost brother.

Plot[]

After 1,000 years of peace, the seal to the gate of hell has been ripped open and a flood of evil spirits have been released into the world. As it stands at the brink of destruction, Getsu Fuma must take on the helm as the leader of his clan and delve into the pits of Hell to rip out the evil at its core.[1]

As the chosen leader and guardian of the land of the living, wield the otherworldly arsenal and powers of the Getsu Clan as you descend deeper into the depths of Hell to eradicate the source of the cataclysm.

Gameplay[]

The game is a hack-and-slash platformer game in a side-scrolling view featuring a Japanese-styled theme in a ukiyo-e art style. The player takes the role of Getsu Fuma and will acquire many moves throughout the course of the game inspired by Japanese martial arts, as well as other supernatural moves. Weapons will be customizable via a crafting system. The game will also feature a soul system.

The game features highly strategic combat based on the spacing and timing aspects unique to Japanese martial arts. Fearsome bosses and ever-changing layouts will challenge players while allowing them to grow stronger with each attempt.[1]

Development[]

On April 14, 2021, Konami posted a Reveal Trailer for a new GetsuFumaDen game titled GetsuFumaDen: Undying Moon on their official YouTube channels. The description of the video on the English channel revealed that the game would be released for PC on Early Access via the Steam network service on May 13, 2021, for $24.99 USD, with retail releases including the Nintendo Switch slated for 2022. Purchasers of the Early Access PC version would receive certain perks, consisting of a digital art book (English/Japanese, with approximately 30 pages), a digital mini soundtrack consisting of 15 songs, and a port of the Famicom edition of GetsuFumaDen, which was originally released in 1987 (this port includes menus both in Japanese and English, although the game itself is only in Japanese).

Shortly after, an official site for the game was made public, which included official character profiles and artworks.

It was later announced that the special perks given to the purchasers of the PC Early Access version would be made available separately and be included on the Deluxe Edition of the game.
